How would I go about checking for exhaust gas in the degas bottle? If there a test strip or tester or what?

 

There are both. There is a tester using a fluid that changes color available at most parts houses rental tool program. Be shure and get the fluid for diesels. There are 2 fluids they look alike by eye but yield different results. Useing the gas formula will yield a false positive in a diesel.
