Coolant Question.

Ok so Ive gone around and around reading about coolants and sca's. About to do a coolant flush in my 01' 7.3, and I purchased Zerex G-05 last night. Well now after reading SpringerPops write up on the external coolant filter I am questioning the sca's again. Am I doing the right thing using Zerex G-05 or should I be using Peak Fleet Charge in it? Any direction on this would be appreciated.

Zerex G05 is the same as the Motorcraft Gold coolant. I dont know how Peak Fleet Charge lines up, but it is also an SCA coolant, so using that wouldnt fix any problems.

If you dont want SCAs use a CAT EC-1 rated HD Extended Life Coolant (ELC).

SCAs arent too much of a problem in a 7.3L, but they can cause problems in 6.0Ls. They just require maintenance in a 7.3L and, if you are so inclined, a filter too.

I have HD ELC and a filter. For the record.

If you go with one of the CAT EC-1 rated coolants you don't need to worry about the SCA issue, and no need for a filter either - as far as I am concerned. (this will stir some controversy). What most refer to as "casting sand" is actually silica precipitating out of the more conventional coolants because they have not been kept in proper balance. As far as casting sand is concerned I doubt that any significant amount is left in the block before they even begin doing any machine work, if in fact they still use sand in the casting process. I did some research on this but could not come up with any solid info one way or the other.

Both silica and sand are present in the engine. I put my coolant filter on after switching to ELC and still caught sand, although obviously once its filtered out, you dont need to worry about it again.

I dont think the sand is too big of an issue.
