i've searched thru the different threads on here in search of different ideas to replace the stock panels in my 79. not a huge of the oem plastic stuff. tons of great ideas ranging from abs, masonite, diamond plate, different grades of sheet metals, plywood and a myriad of covering/molding ideas, etc.
i used to have a 69 f250. still kicking myself for selling it. at any rate, i always admired the simplicity of the interior, especially the door panels. i was wondering if anyone had retrofitted a set of these bumpside panels to a dentside? if so, do you have pics? just wanted to post up and see if this was a viable option. i'm not sure if the dimensions will even allow for the swap. ideas, suggestions, or criticisms are welcome.
I remember a while back someone posted about doing that. I looked at the bump doors I have and it can be done. Would look cool. But def, take some work.
Well you can always do one out of aluminium tread plate or just an partial overlay. But I do not think the earlier door panel will work without ALOT of mod work the latch set up is way different.
You can also over lay the bottom rectangle part that is painted silver in the last pic.
A way you could make a door panel using Bump XLT panels, would be to start with your set of Dent panels, and cut the panel leaving only the outer raised surround, then bond a piece of thin hard board to it from the backside. Use Bump panels inside this new flat area. As for Bump door handles, and the support for the armrest, well, that would take some fabrication, but if you want this look, it is possible.
fabrication isn't an issue, just tossing around an idea. i do like the diamond plate pics. those look sharp...although i prefer my interior to be a bit subdued personally. really just trying to think of a few things on the cheap but last for a while. i do like the ABS idea, just not sure about warpage over time. same thing with plywood. both of which i have laying around the shop. i'll see what i can come up with here in the next week and post up when i come up with something. thanks so much fellas!
