Extremely frustrated that my 07 Lariat cab corner is bubbling. I really think this is a paint adhering defect as there was no rust underneath, just bare metal. It has now started to rust where the the metal is exposed. Any suggestions how to tackle this? I was contemplating paint matched linex all the way around the bottom, or taking to a body shop which would be expensive. Thanks
The 3rd brake light gasket leaks. Water gets into the lower cab corners and can't get out. When they made the next major changes, they re-designed the 3rd brake light mounting area.
not a body guy, go call a few shops. ask around and go visit several of them. tell them what you want to do. I found a retired body guy that did a bunch of work for me on my 52 GMC. It took a bit of work but you will find someone.
hey guys, I got this going on a little bit also. Is there a way to replace the 3rd brake light gasket or put some black silicone sealant on it to fix??
nevermind guys, I looked on ebay and actually found the new gasket to put on the light, so I will be doing this. Wish I would have known this 3 or 4 years ago. I actually just got my truck rust proofed a month or so ago. Felt like a idiot having an 11 year old truck rust proofed, but the guy said it looked good overall. I don't have any rust coming through anywhere except that paint that bubbled in the rear cab corners. If I was gonna trade anytime soon I wouldnt have done it, but I have no plans to trade my truck. I'm coming up on 10 years of owning it this september.
Replacing the gasket with another OEM, or is there another one that is redesigned somehow and is better at sealing out the rain? Mine looks good and I would like to keep it that way.
Clear silicone on the gasket works good to seal it up. That's how I fixed many of those leaks. Replace your bulbs first so you don't have to crack the seal for a long time.
so I went ahead and just replaced my 3rd brake light to make sure it was done right. Got the new one for about $75. It is just plug and play, only caveat is that the wiring harness is clipped into the cab and and you cant get to it without undoing the clip. Well, its really hard to get to. Very tight space and I didn't have pliers long and small enough to reach it. I think you could with some extra long needle nose. I ended up taking a screwdriver and hammer and knocked the end of the clip off to free it. It really doesn't need to be clipped, just tucked in behind where it was. Anyway as you will see in these pics, yes the seal was bad and it was leaking. The new seal is much thicker and appears to be a different type of foam material. pics of the old one.

I just went ahead and replaced the entire light. It does have the new seal integrated on it. I found on eBay. They should say something like "new seal, waterproof" or something like that. I had found the new seal only on eBay for like 25 bucks, in that case you'd just remove the old seal completely and then put the new one on. But I wanted to get the new assembly with the new seal already applied so went that route. Cost more money though obviously. I didn't take any pictures of the new one, sorry.
