For some reason my bat. is not charging. I replaced the alt and volt reg. same condition. Thought the fusible link was bad. Looked fried, replaced, but was ok. The truck ran fine when I parked it. Now some months later I have this problem. Where should I look for the ground cable? I did some searching but couldn't find the answer to my problem. This is on my 83 F350. What does the capacitor connected to the voltage reg. do?
Capacitors are used for RFI suppression. You may want to remove it as they tend to "leak" to ground as they go bad.
Grounding is a problem with old trucks, it was just barely adequate when they were new. Follow the negative cable where it connects from the battery to the block and throw it away. Grind down to bright shiny metal at the connection and install the new cable. Use your voltmeter to perform "voltage drop tests" on the starting and charging system, all the corrosion and resistance is hard on alternators.
