Okay, I want to hook up a solar panel charger (5w 400 milliamp) to my batteries BUT don't want to punch a hole in the firewall to run the leads. I have located the four (red, blue, black, white) up-fitter switch wires which are attached to my up-fitter switches so they are occupied.
However, I have found like 11 other blank wires at the same location. Does anyone know if any of those wires run into the engine compartment and "dead end" there? Or are all of those going to electronic components else where? Here is a pic.
A little hard to tell from the pics. Have you owned the truck since new? If not, I wonder if there's been an aftermarket stereo of some sort in there at one time.
I just installed a new double DIN in my 2014 and a lot of those wires look to be the same color as the wires on the new stereo's harness. I also remember there being 11 or 12 splices from the new stereo to the harness that plugs into the truck's factory harness. Because I bought that harness with the stereo I didn't actually cut into any of the truck's wiring.
Just to it the easy way and punch a small hole through the rubber grommet going through the firewall into the cab and be done with it. That's what I did when I ran a dedicated wire to my battery for my CB radio.
I don't remember the specific term, but those wires are something like customer access wires. There's leads for parking lights, turn signals, high idle, etc etc. They are part of the wiring harness and actually have functions, they do not dead end. I suggest just punching through the grommet as previously stated, or find a pass through. My truck (2006) has a small grommeted, but open, pass through up above the parking brake. Good luck!
They look remarkably similar to the pto control wires on my 2011. Why not tap into one of the up-fitters before the switch? Are any of them hot with the ignition off? 12v cigarette lighter wire?
I made up several panels years ago and just plugged them into the cigarette letter, which on most of my vehicles was always hot.
Not sure year your ford is-I can tell that much from the wires. These are going to be for the pto configuration. This is an option found mostly if not only on the diesel trucks. Some trucks have this provision on the trans others don't. Take a close look at these as they should have white tags stating what they are for. Do not hook into these. Your best bet is to go to the SJB located on passenger kick panel and look for an incoming red wire for your tap in. Not sure of what wire but it will be red.
What year and model of truck ?
The standard Ford Upfitter circuits usually include four or more pass throughs. Take a look at the wire harness above or below and with in one foot of the brake booster (vac or hyd)
Sorry guys about the lack of detail on my truck. It's a 2006 F250 SD 6.0PSD CC SB 4x4. I have located the upfitter pass throughs no problem and they are being used. I was under there yesterday when I found these additional capped wires and was wondering where they went. Is this where the legendary "high idle" wire is located?
