So I pulled the trigger today and bought the fuel rail crossover and overboost code regulator from riff raff today. I want to get all the supporting mods done before I get injectors. I have read so many threads on injectors I actually know less now! I'm going to follow Tugly's advice and get new 160's.... I think. I would like to get everything done or purchased before I get the new injectors so I only have to get new tunes once.
What other mods do I need? I put the Beans Diesel E fuel kit on my OBS and I think it was the best mod I ever did to the truck. Do I need to do something similar to my SD? I haven't done the Harp/Hutch mod yet, but I will as soon as my tank is empty.
My truck is the Early 99. What about turbos? I'm not looking for a million HP. I just want her to go faster! Of course...
As always I appreciate the help you guys always give.
The Hutch and Harpoon Mod is at the top of the list. Next would be a regulated return of some sort. Also, if your boots are the original OEM's then the really thick replacements by Riffraff can't be beat, expect a decrease in lag at a minimum and maybe a 1-2 psi boost increase, and are less expensive than new really thin OEM's which are complete junk.
160's will give you a nice improvement in performance over your stock injectors which are 120 splits if still stock. I went with 30% nozzles which helps even more and keep the truck where it can still work and tow reliably w/o twisting shafts and keeps 4r100 parts out of the tires on my trailer. I would have gone with 80% nozzles but was afraid I would break more stuff because I lack the discipline to keep my foot out of it when empty. 100%ers would have guaranteed that I would break a lot of stuff.
So, if you go with something big, lack the same thing, then a HD4R100 or better should be on the list if you have the stock tranny.
Tuned stock injectors will spin the stock turbo out of its compressor map. With an E99, your options are gonna be pricey. You could either convert to L99 pedestal, up pipes, intake ect. Or you could go with a T4 style turbo like the S366 or a Bell BASB.
Hutch for sure. Air in fuel gave me a lot of grief, because of a botched clamp on the fuel line to the tank.
While plenty of people like to tweak the fuel pressure for "more powah" - 60 PSI works best. Once those injectors start using more fuel than the stockers ever did, your fuel pressure will be a focus. That brings up another point - gauges. FP gauge for sure, and the rest is common knowledge.
Your air is going to be a challenge as well. I doubt the AIS will take care of business on a turbo that can give a clean burn on stage 1s, and the 6637 specs say "no way". The stock turbo will come up short - I maxed mine out with stock sticks and supporting mods. The stock exhaust will choke the system. Can you detune the Stage 1s and use all stock support? Yes. Can you get away with stock support for stage 1s tuned for performance? For a while. A short while.
Howdy,
Not to hijack this thread but I was considering the "Hutch" mod as well (2000 F250 SD, 7.3. with 89K) but read somewhere that replacing something on the fuel pump inlet would help with air getting into the system. My truck is 100% stock except for the 4" exhaust system the PO installed. Is there a DIY for this fix/mod, pictures, etc? I want to keep this truck a long time.
Thanks
Excellent links that JOHN2001 posted. It's been a long time since I did these mods but I recall some folks running around finding all the parts to do it themselves and only saving @ $25 compared to purchasing a kit. Here are two examples.
Rich (Tugly) has a different screen type setup that has worked well for him - not sure about the cost. I have had the Strictly Diesel kit above in my F-250 for @ 10 years and in the Excursion for @ 4.
Edit: Definitly consider replacing the fuel pick up umbrella in the tank - these buggers are a common problem after many years of service
Cool, thanks John2001. Sorry if I was not clear, I was looking for the fuel pump inlet mod. I recall reading somewhere on this forum about replacing the hose/fitting?
I don't know if this is "steel" relevant, but this is the pre-pump screen white Buffalo mentioned:
I can't remember the price, but the part number will get you there. I never have more than a 5 PSI fuel pressure dip at WOT with the bigger sticks. I tried another filter strategy before this, and it killed my fuel pressure at WOT:
I don't know exactly what you're talking about but maybe it's as simple as cutting the quick disconnects off of the line and using a hose clamp in its place.
