Sticking turbo or something else

I am pulling a 9k lb RV today and I would pull a hill and it when it down shifted the VGT would show 14 right before I would loose most of the power and the VGT would show 83 and be stuck there. It eventually came back and the power returned. Im guessing those are pretty classic signs of a sticking turbo but there are no codes this time. I had a P0299 recently but cleaned the EBP and that hasnt come back.

You can check your map sensor and hose too, but I bet your on the right track. Sounds like it's time to clean your turbo. Depending on wear, you may need a unison ring as well.

It depends how long it has been sticking. Here is a good video on the process.

It's time. Mine stuck at 87k. I too had a P0299, cleared it and it didn't come back even though my unison ring was stuck solid.

Well pulled the turbo last night and cleaned it up. Used a scotch-brite on a air grinder and went to work. Topped it off with some anti seize and put it back together. It wasnt as bad as i thought it would be. The y pipe clamp in the back was a PIA! Ran it hard today and seemed to run fine. I will have to hook the trailer up to it and try it now

Thanks

Nice.
I would expect your boost to max at about 26 psi when operating properly. You might check your vgt's to ensure you are between 15-85%.

VGT looked good. I tried a couple of WOT unloaded and could only hit 25 on the scanguage. It felt pretty good. Looking forward to towing

Funny, but depending on where your unison ring stuck, you will probably feel less power, knowing it works properly, not allowing over boost, and head gasket issues.
Sounds like you're right where you need to be.
Good luck.

Id check EBP reading also.. I mean the codes right there. should be atmospheric pressure with key on engine off (14.7psi). Could be a bad vgt solenoid also. mine went bad at 100k. VGT duty cycle% is usually in the 40-60% range cruising around. Mine only sees 15 and 85% went im sittin in traffic.. itll cycle. I wouldn't anti seize your turbo either. that stuff tends to gunk up if you put too much. Polished stainless steel on steel is good enough. Now just remember to exercise your turbo from now on

I'm getting the P0299 as well.

I just bought it and I could tell that right after I started driving the truck it was down on power. I got a scan gauge and hooked up that and this is what I'm seeing.
ICP idle around 500 up to 3000 at full throttle. VGT 85% at idle down to about 40%. EBP 14.4 at KOEO up to 50, and MAP from 14 up to 25. How close should the EBP and MAP be at full throttle?

I have cleaned the EBP sensor port and tube, EGR valve, and the MAP sensor tube and port. I cleared the code last week, but it came back on Sunday. I got the blue spring in Monday night, but it didn't seem like it helped when I took it to work yesterday morning. Haven't looked at the IPR yet, but ICP seems to be fine unless it's measured on the other side. Still kinda new to the 6.0.

I'm usually pretty busy with work, so how long would it take to tear the turbo out and clean it up? I have a car, so I'm not counting on the Ex as a daily driver.

I would say 3-4 hours, maybe a full day if you are not in a hurry. How many miles are on your truck? You may want to order a unison ring before you tear into it.

scaldinghotcarl you boost pressure is pretty low. You say 14 to 25. I'm assuming your reading absolute pressure for the 14 and if its only going to 25 thats only 10-11 lbs of boost(rounding since atomospheric should be about 14.7). if its in absolute psi than your boost should go to about 40 max

She has about 104k now. I'll call the dealer and see what the lead time is if they don't have one.

Yes that was absolute. Dad has an 06 F350 and I see 10-15 in boost on that regularly, so this is why I'm leaning in this direction.

So I got it apart, and that ring was stuck solid. I don't know if this sat for a year or what, but there's so much corrosion on the outer race of that housing I doubt I'll be able to take enough material off to get it to spin freely. It's also reman which is surprising at 104k. Then I found this...
all of this pitting. Are these worth saving? Can I use them, or do they go?

I can't say how much money that there isn't in the budget for a turbo right now, but there isn't much. A reman with core is about a grand. I will plan on going through this whole motor and asking a lot more out of it. Maybe it's time I do that...

But for now to get it back on the road. Should I buy vanes, or run with these and get a year out of them until I rebuild?
