Hey kopfenjager, love you have cooking here, since you and Bud are using early blocks, I would like to get your take one the block I have.
I picked it up off of c/l with all machine work done, deck zeroed ,crank ground, rods and pistons balanced, TMI pistons .030 13cc dish.
The casting date is very hard to read, but I believe it to be 2F19, assembly date is 3F28. I guess I'm looking for some one to tell me to go for it with this block rather than start over with a 78 or 79 block...

block part number

The Gilmer belt set up I found on ebay, I know, I know. As for blocks, I would try to find pre 72 blocks cast at Detroit iron foundry. They seem to be beefier in the valley tray area and lower end. I know others like the later truck blocks. I avoid the MCC blocks all together.

A snappy engine, a slight imbalance and a no slip cog belt. The engine didn't seem to like that set up and got rid of it.

Snapped it right off when i blipped the throttle.

Toasted radiator, nobody was hurt but my ego

Putting the stock pulleys back on

Plumbing

Putting the hood on.

Hmmmmm

Bling! Just added hp right there.

These needed rebuilt.

Pressing the caps on

All back together, new seals, races, bearings and grease. Hawk hd brake pads, New brake lines and extended lines from frame to axle and a new master cylinder.

Sexy night shot

Ouch! That fan looks like the prop on a plane that came in with the wheels up. And that was a SLIGHT imbalance?

But, the rest looks like really good progress. One step backwards and several forwards. Hang in there!

Looks like my AEM wideband. But, your idle air/fuel mix is better than mine as I'm running 13:1. Need to lean it up a bit, but it is covering up a choke that comes off too soon, so....

Anyway, looking good. It sounds good and looks like it is running well.

Thank you. Yeah idles strongest at around 13 to 13.5, but it doesn't idle bad at 14.5 to 15 either. Noticed that when I put it in gear it leans out slightly. If I run to lean in the idle, out of gear, it will lean surge when in gear. Still fiddling. As for choke, I'm running a manual choke so I can control the air fuel ratio and warm up rpm.

Just have to say, that if it wasn't for FTE, I would not be able to do this. I spend hours searching and reading. This place is a gold mine and I seldom ask questions because so much can be found with the search function. Although I seldom ask questions, if others didn't, I couldn't have got this done. Also want to shout out to FSB. Great forum over there. AND a huge shout out to TMI. He has single handedly (ok maybe he had a little help) solved the deck height and low oil pressure issues with this engine series. Somethings that have cursed these engines for awhile now. Thank you all, you guys are great.

I agree with everything you said. FTE has helped me immensely, as has Tim. And even FSB has helped from time to time.

Not that I put a lot of faith in accuracy of desk top dynos, but it's a great place to store all the numbers.

Nice looking lines

What the puter thinks of my build.

Head flow data used in calc.

Where the numbers fell, all thow it doesn't have spots for bearing clearance, or rod side clearance etc.

A chart full of numbers and stuff

Mapping the distributor advance before recurve
