Unhappy 4 wheel drive not working

99 mazda b4000 5 spd. manual 6/4.0

My light comes on saying it's in 4 low or high, the transfer case is engaged that is I can feel the obvious reduction in gear ratio but the front is not locked or is broke. I don't use it but maybe once a year, last year on an icy hill just the rear was spinning, there is no clanking or grinding or any sounds coming from the front diff.

Is there some electrical thing that may not be working that tells the hubs to lock, the only problems I ever had with it was coming out of 4/dr. the light would stay on I would have to back up numerous times before it would disengage but it always did.

Thank you for any suggestions.

PVH hubs; start by making sure both are seeing vacuum when 4X is engaged and that there are no leaks in the lines.

If you do a forum search of "pulse vacuum hublock" you will get a lot of hits regarding the problematic PVH system. There are a few workarounds available.

Thank you so much, I usually do a search but nothing useable came up for 4/wheel dr. not working. So it's called "pulse vacuum hublock" okie dokie, I think the patient still has a pulse so maybe there's a chance it will live.

I am new here and want to say you's guys n gals (if any) are great I just wish I could help with somebodys problems instead of just asking for help and not contributing to helping. If anyone needs assistance on cooking, 18 wheeler driving tips, or help with some of lifes other little problems just shoot me a message.

Smile Ford Ranger 4WD with PVH (pulsed vacuum hublocks)

I just bought a 1999 Ranger 4WD that also has the PVH (pulsed vacuum hublocks). This looks like a system that will work well on the showroom floor, but will become problematic in the real world after a few years. One of the first things I had to do was change a hub that had a failing bearing that was making noise. (Rock Auto -- $80) Not a big problem to change. That fixed the ABS problem as well. But, the 4WD is not engaging properly. I might have created a problem by putting some grease on the splines, but I would prefer to change to "manual hublocks" anyway. There is a post on this website that describes how to put a hole in the center of the outer plastic cover so that you can manually engage the hubs -- but the pictures don't appear on my computer screen for some reason. Does anyone have any experience with making a hole in the outer plastic cover and then using a probe to push the hublocks into engagement manually? I assume that the vacuum lines should be blocked so that the vacuum will not inadvertently disengage the hubs. Any comments?

After solving my own problem, I started a new thread explaining what I did. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to post pictures yet. Anyone can email me and I will attach pictures to a return email -- fred.furrer@hotmail.com -- or call me at (608) 697-1249 Cellular. For $7 total cost, I converted my PVH to "manual" using parts bought at ACE Hardware. Very easy, very simple, very low cost, very effective.
