Seems like I read about this problem last winter.
First snow here in SW Michigan and I needed 4 wheel drive this morning, turn the switch to 4hi and can feel that it went into 4 wheel. I get up to the next corner and stop, when I go to take off I'm not in 4 wheel anymore but light is still on. Turn to 2hi and then back to 4hi and can feel it go in but it comes out again by the next corner.
It seems like it had something to do with vacuum. Can somebody help me out with what going on?
Thanks in advance!
Turn your hubs to manual lock before you leave, then when you need 4wd turn the **** to lock the transfer case in. I don't think I ever heard of what your truck is doing. Are you sure your hubs are locking when you first put it in 4wd, then unlocking at next light?
Does your heater go to the defrost when this happens? If so you have a vacuum leak.
Yes, the hubs are locked in at first.
I'm not sure about the defrost I'll have to try that.
Is there a certain place to start looking for the vacuum leak?
I just had a guy tell me about a solonoid that is part of the 4 wheel system. He said it is actuated by the 4x4 switch and it holds a vacuum which keeps you in 4 wheel. Does anybody know if this is how it works? This may be where I need to start.
Rick,
I think that is the string of posts I was thinking of, thanks. I'm going to go through all of these if I can figure where these lines are and stuff. Not a mechanic but do like to fix stuff myself. It mentions a vac hub solonoid but doesn't state where it is. Do you know? Maybe as I track the vac lines I will find it.
I never had to change mine, but I did have a vacuum leak on one of my hubs. It was the vacuum hose that goes to the hub. Did you do the defrost test? Turn the ac on then turn the ESOF know to 4wd and see if the ac defaults to the defrost. This is the easyest way to tell if you have a vacuum leak.
OK, ac test-yes it went to defrost. Drivers side hose has weather cracks at fitting on top of hub. Could be the source of my leak. Can I just pull this off and cut the hose above the weathered area(about an inch) and push it back onto the fitting?
You could do that to see if that is the problem. But I would change the hose on both sides. You are starting in the right place. Work your way up if that is not it.
Pulled the vac hose off and noticed the fitting was real rusty and didnt look like it had a clean hole in it to get a vacuum. Tried to clean it off best I could, cut off about an inch of hose and zip tied it back on. Test drive-nothing, won't even go in 4 wheel now. I wonder if some rust may have fallen into that fitting when I was working it over. I guess next step is to get a new fitting put in and replace hoses. Any suggestions?
