09 f150 5.4l. 36 gal. after fueling it takes 4 or 5 cranks to start engine. doesn't matter if its partial or complete fill up. after start has a little black smoke and and rough idle for a few seconds. then runs fine with plenty of power. any ideas? im stumped.
Likely you have a problem with the ventilation for your tank. I had a solenoid fail on my '10 , and the tank was not venting properly. If I ran it down to less than 1/4 tank, it would suck the plastic fuel tank in and collapse it partially. Forget the exact name of the solenoid, but it was under the truck , located in the carbon filter box that recycles the gas fumes to be burned later. Another is under the hood and directs these fumes back into the intake to be burned. Several have mentioned similar problems, hopefully they will chime in as well.
The purge valve is on the intake and the canister close valve is by the charcoal canister. If the purge valve is stuck open, it could cause the intake to suck up raw fuel after you fill your tank and cause misfire and smoke from the exhaust. At this point the intake is flooded and causes the extended cranking.
If your purge valve is stuck open at the same time the canister close valve is closed, this could cause the fuel tank to collapse.
Correct mgreen18, and considering how cheap (in relative terms) they both are, I would replace both. If you collapse the tank, there are threads of damaged fuel pumps and sending units, even whole tanks having to be replaced, if you suck in too much raw fuel, hydrolock and damaged internal engine parts could result.
