I have a '92 F-150 that has a 4.9 I6 with a 5 spd behind it. It does have the dual tanks - where the problem is. The problem is that lately it has started transfering fuel from one tank to the other tank. It will move half a tank of gas from one tank to the other within 10 miles... so I know the pumps are working pretty dang good.
My question is - what is allowing this to happen? and what part do I fix/replace to stop this from happening?
I do have some mechanical knack - although I generally prefer to stay to basic carbs or my Harley.... I do have a buddy who will be enlisted to help on this though.
There is a check valve in the lines to prevent just this. If the check valve goes bad, the fuel pump from the tank you are running on will pump fuel from that tank through the check valve and into the other tank. I cant remember exactly where the valve is, but I guarantee that once you replace it, you wont have that problem anymore.
Yes it is going from one tank to another - front to back/ back to front. But from what I gaithered from the links I have to swap the whole fdm in both tanks then.
Great....
Thanks for the quick replies and good info - I guess my searches were just with the wrong words.
I have looked into the cost of a set of new fuel pumps... at $130 a piece. How long should it take to drop and replace the pumps from both tanks. I know the Murphy's law - and he should get his butt kicked - but on a good day, any guesses? I really can't afford to not have my truck down for a couple days.
