If you're getting fuel pressure with no air when it's running... it's bound to be an IP issue at this point. The IP is the nerve center here, the carburator and distributor, and while it's usually resilient, it can fail in any number of ways.

how long have you run it after starting? you really need to let it run for about 1/2 hour to get all the air out of the injection system if it is just idling. if you drive it, you should drive it for at least 10-15 minutes.

Bad news: I found metal specs on the dip stick. I am also starting to hear a lot of rough bottom end banging. I think I'll need a new motor..

Thoughts?

Thanks guys

If it were me, I'd start looking on Craig's list for a used engine. They pop up for $500-1000 every once in a while. When I needed one I bought a 2wd truck with a bad e4od for $900. Swapped the engine out and now I have a parts truck.

Yea, I actually am seriously considering swapping in a 7.3PSD. What're your guys thoughts on this and is it worth it?

(I will start a separate thread)

Thanks again

I am sure the Eng mounting point are the same but don't count on the harness and ECM to be the same . However it can be easily done .

The PCM won't be the same by definition, since an IDI is completely mechanical and doesn't have one. Automatic-equipped IDIs will have a TCM, and the PSD PCM would take its place. From what I've read, the engine and cab wiring harnesses are completely different.

Psd swap seems like a pretty big undertaking. As was said, wiring harness is different, and not just under hood. I would put that money and efforts into a turbo on an idi. I don't recall seeing any write ups on an idi to psd swap but I'm sure there is one out there somewhere. A used engine like I suggested is a bit of a gamble, but if you can get one for $5-600 and spend part of a weekend swapping them out and be back on the road I think it's worth the risk.

a powerstroke will go in there with relative ease, but you will need a doner truck to scavenge the engine, trans, and wiring harness from.
a DT360 on the other hand is just downrite different and the way to go to **** off the cummings kool aid drinkers.

Have you though of pulling and rebuilding the IDI . It might be less headache assuming that is every thing on the truck is working correctly specially since you are considering PSD. I am sure other skilled members here will point you @ the right direction

My buddy did a PSD swap and as noted it's mostly bolt in. IIRC the wiring harness was a real pain, and some massaging of the firewall was required.

As performance goes, IDI is *never* gonna have the power and efficiency potential that a DI engine will have. Doesn't matter what turbo you put on an IDI it's still IDI. But IDI's Fords generally are a LOT more reliable IMO due to lack of electronic doo dads.

The PSD 7.3 can go to about 350hp on a stock longblock. Around 400hp they start bending connecting rods, but I believe there are different con rod versions and some are stronger. Getting into power mods on the 7.3 psd is somewhat involved though, so it might really be worth doing some of it while it's out of the truck. High performance HPOP and injectors plus a chip. I'd probably consider intercooler, and whether I wanted split shot injectors too, since conventional and split shot were both offered.

Well your a little off. The forged con rods are good to 500+ rwhp. The pmr rods only 400-450 which only came in the 2002+ trucks. Not very many people will go with split shot injectors because they are really a 97 Cali model or 99+ thing.

Well I've ordered the parts and just decided to rebuild the IDI. I don't have the time or money to do a PS swap at the moment.. I would like to do a little tweaking if I can while its out of the truck.. suggestions. (Stock turbo, banks exhaust, thats it.)

Thanks guys
