4 Wheel Low

I have a new to me 1998 Expedition EB, and took it out this afternoon in the desert to off-road, switch to 4L and when I was done had a heck of time getting it back into 2WD. I have read the proper way is to have the vehicle stopped, in neutral and foot on brake, then switch to 2WD from 4L, is this the proper procedure?

Yes, that's the correct way to do it when switching in or out of low. Having difficulty going in and out of low is usually a sign of the shift motor going bad.
