If it ain't broke, don't fix it but when you do, use ARP Studs and have the heads checked at a machine shop. If it does need to be done, Rusty Axlerod explained it about as well as it needs to be explained!

The yield point is set by the mix of metals and heat used when they make the bolts. It's pretty precise and once the bolt has "yielded" it is never as strong as before. That is to say if you do re-use them (and they don't break) they will not have as much clamping force, be as tight on install (you're using torque angle remember) and will stretch easier than they did the first time. All this is why Ford includes new bolts in the gasket kit.

About the only scenario I can think of where I'd reuse them might be if you're trying to fix the engine on the SS Minnow, and the professor can't make you a set out of coconuts.

Why on earth would I ever send heads to a machine shop to be checked. Its about as simple as it gets to do it yourself.

Those guys are still hating the 6.0l? A couple guys had problems with 03 trucks in the very beginning, and they won't let it go.

If you've opened it up, stud it. It doesn't guarantee you won't have future issues, but provides a higher level of tolerance if you experience adverse running conditions(ie: sticky turbo causing over boost/leaking injector creating excessive cylinder pressure).

B/C once you figure they're within spec only a machine shop will take .014 off the heads so you can troll FTE about your 24mpg 6.0 for a few months? Where had Monty been?
