Hello all,
We picked up a new 2014 Expedition EL just over a month ago and really love it. Living in upstate New York, it is mostly below freezing this time of the year. I've noticed recently when you start it when the engine is cold, shortly after firing up, a humming noise can be heard from the engine bay. If you start driving before it warms up, the noise can still be heard, changing pitch with engine speed. After driving a few minutes, the sounds goes away. If you stay in park and just rev the engine, the noise still changes pitch with the engine speed.
Any idea what this could be or if I should worry about it? It does not affect how the truck drives in anyway and only happens when it is cold.

Congrats on the new Expedition, mgazak. Since you're concerned, it wouldn't hurt to make an appointment at your dealership. How many miles are on it?
Thanks for following up, mgazak. Have you made an appointment to take it in to your dealer? I'll escalate this to your regional customer service manager so they can ensure your concerns are addressed. PM me your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership; leave the rest to me.
Crystal,
I sent you a PM. I have not made an appointment yet. My wife just had our fourth child so things have been a little crazy. We are very pleased with our new Expedition. Thanks!
Could be something as simple as a pulley, could be something as bad as a major driveline issue. Get it in sooner rather than later if its under warranty and if they try to pull any crap escalate to corporate and find another dealer.
Thanks for responding, rjd75! Do you still hear this noise? When was the last time you were at the dealer for this?

Got it, mgazak! My reply is waiting for you in your inbox. Congrats on the new addition to your family!
I picked up used 2014 with 5300 miles on it. My truck does the same thing especially when it is cold. I haven't contacted the dealer yet.
Going to the dealer is a great next step, Deano_1. Additionally, I can assist by looping in your regional customer service manager. To get started, PM me your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership.

Yes, I hear it every morning when I start my truck. I have not gone to the dealer with it as taking a problem like this to the dealer can be a real exercise in frustration. I would have to drop it off the night before and leave it there so they could hear it start cold. The sound will then go away after it warms up or is driven. I don't have the time or patience for that right now, I am extremely busy and can't be without a vehicle in the morning. Hopefully Deano or Mgazak will find out what is causing it and then I can go to the dealer with more information. This truck already spent 2 weeks at a dealer for multiple oil leaks when I first purchased it.

Let me know when you want to have your dealership address this and I'll get it escalated, rjd75. Once you've made an appointment, PM me your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership.
Did anyone get any further with this issue? I needed an oil change so I dropped it off last night because it is very cold here right now and I knew it would make the sound. I instructed the dealer not to start it without a mechanic present to listen to the sound. I just got off the phone with the service advisor. She tells me they only heard the sound for a few seconds and that it sounded like it was coming from the dashboard. I said the dashboard?? was he in the truck?? She said yes. I said the sound is coming from the front of the motor, why would he stay inside the truck??? She said, sir it's very cold outside today the mechanic is not going to stand outside!! So let me get this straight, I walked my little kids to the bus stop and stood there in frigid temps so that the mechanic could start my truck in the cold and the advisor is telling me it is too cold for him to stand outside and listen to it. Sorry Crystal, this is exactly why I didn't want to bother with this in the first place. I was 100% certain I would be faced with this type of incompetence. I suppose next time I will write detailed instructions, such as open hood, place head under hood etc. What a colossal waste of time and aggravation.
