Since ford mechanics are averse to cold weather, I Went out and bought a mechanic stethoscope and checked where the noise is coming from, it appears to be coming from the crankshaft pulley. Not sure what that means, I'm sure it's not good and not an easy fix.
Hey rjd75, I have not had a chance to bring our truck in yet. Crystal got the ball rolling for me and I even spoke with the dealer but we've been so busy, I didn't want to be down to one car. I'll be sure to let you know what I find out. I still hear the noise but it hasn't gotten any worse and if I let it warm up long enough, it is usually gone by the time I start driving.
Same here goes away, but a truck with this price tag should not be making strange noises at any time. Tell your dealer that you suspect it is the crank pulley. I had the stethoscope on and waved it in front of all the pulleys and it is definitely coming from there on my truck. I found that with the stethoscope I could still here the sound long after it would have seemed to have gone away with the naked ear.

FYI, for those having this issue. I brought it back again this week and informed the mechanic the noise appeared to be coming from the crank pulley. The mechanic said it was unlikely but he did say that the tensioner pulley next to it is a part that is changed very often due to failure and strange noises. Anyways, he changed the tensioner and for the last 3 mornings there have been no more steam whistle sounds coming from my motor. It has been very cold here so I hope that this has solved the problem. I do still have tremendous wind noise at highway speed which they said they "could not reproduce".
it almost sounds like when someone runs their finger around the rim of a glass and it makes that humming noice... randomly when I get in my truck and start driving it will do this. It gets louder when I excellarate but stops a couple minutes up the road. If I drive real easy it does seem to be really quiet. But again, it only lasts for a minute or two. It started when it was getting very hot out, like in the 90's consistently. Any ideas? Was thinking it almost sounds like a bearing issue in a pulley.
