I found a 351 ford engine just sitting in a field on some land I just bought. I don't know much about fords but the stamp on the block (with the intake manifold removed) is 351 WCP2. If anyone can give me some info on this engine or where I can find info it would be greatly appreciated.
Check the valve covers. 5 bolts per v/c is a 351W. 8 is a 351C or 351M. If it has eight then (since your intake is off) you could check pushrod length. 8.500" is a 351C and 9.500" is a 351M. If you don't want to do that, then check the mounting surface for the front intake manifold end seal against the thermstat housing mounting pad. If it is the same height as the thermostat housing pad, it is a 351C. If the end seal surface is higher (looks like a raised ridge kind of thing) it is a 351M. There are other ways but they suck to check. The main bearing journals are 3.000" on an M-block, whereas they are 2.6XX" on a C-Block. The intake is about an inch wider on the M, unfortunately I don't know the widths of either one. You could check the motor mounts too. If it has a 3-bolts in a triangle, 351M. If it doesn't, it is a 351W/C. Use the v/c method to verify from there. The valve cover method is by far the easiest way.
I think you can also measure the space between bellhousing bolts, I believe your 351-M and 400 would be about 7.25 inches apart on the top, whereas the small block 351-C/W are closer to 5 inches. BTW, I thought there were 6 bolts on the Windsor valve covers? The only way to tell a 400 from a 351-M is by measuring inside components. Oh yeah, the distributor sits flush with the intake seat on a 351-C, about 1 inch taller like jdawg said on the M or 400
