escape headache

I'm still having trouble getting my escape to run right . because of the cold weather in northeast pa I haven't been able to work on it much . one question . will low fuel pressure cause hard start and and backfire through the intake with slow rev up and some hesitation ??

I'm not sure about the back fire but low fuel pressure will cause hard starts and a rough idle for a few seconds. My 98 Ford Ranger does that (w/o the back fire) unless I cycle the key several times before starting it. It has about 15 pounds on the first cycle, and it increases about 10 pis on each cycle to about 45 on the 4th cycle. As soon as the engine starts, the fuel pressure jumps to 60 psi and holds there. I am told that it is a weak fuel pressure regulator but I am not going to fix it because I am also told that it is part of the pump and I don't want to take it out this time of year. (northern Maine) The outside temp also effects it. It starts good in the warmer months.
