In reference to my Ticking noise come from the right side, towards the bottom:
I've replaced all the lifters on the passenger side, checked for loose spark plugs, and replaced the exhaust manifold with new gasket and studs. Replacing the exhaust manifold was not an easy job. Broke 2 studs and had to cut a little of the motor mount(4.6L) to get a socket on #2 & #3 bottom hex nuts. It's my understand that 5.4L have about 2" of clearance.

After all this, still have the noise! Read somewhere where it could be the catalytic converter breaking up and the flex plate either cracked or bolt loose to torque converter. Man this is tough!

Did you use a mechanics stethoscope?,if not they are inexpensive and work well

Yes I did. Have had one for several years. Not an expert. I checked out the bell house are and the exhaust manifold area. The noise seems loudest after exhaust manifold casting, at the catalytic converter flared fitting. Right under the O2 sensor. Noise gets quieter after engine has been running awhile.

Truck runs really good. No loss of power, no stumbling, and no missing.

I had a similar noise coming from the same area. Kinda sounded like a diesel when running. Ended up being the timing chain tensioner. Just bought the whole kit and did all of it. No more tick.

Don't understand how the sound can travel from the timing chain tensioner to the beginning of the catalytic converter or lower back part of the engine. I'll check it again with my stethoscope at the timing chain front cover. Didn't hear anything there before.

Wow! Hard to believe I've been chasing this ticking problem since 01/22/2015 and still have not found where it is coming from. Sound resonates all over the engine using a Mechanics Stethoscope. Very tough! Here is what I have done to my 4.6L in all these months.

Replaced:
- Front Timing Chain Cover Gaskets & Seal, Timing Chains, Guides, and Tensioners (good thing I changed, long guides were broken)
- Right Side Exhaust Manifold and Gasket
- Serpentine Belt Tensioner
- 16 Brand New Lifters, 2 for each cylinder.
- Valve Cover Gaskets
- New Plugs
- New Coil Over Plugs (COP)

Checked:
- Loose nuts bolting Torque Converter to Engine Flex Plate (Flywheel). (4) Nuts to Studs were tight!

The noise is the strongest coming somewhere close to the Torque Converter. Still! It's not a rod knock. Too much of a tick for rod knock. Does seem like it is quieter when engine has warmed up.

What's left?????

Just to let everyone know............the ticking noise was the piston wrist pin being worn out.

Thanks Everyone,

Tell us more, was it the connecting rod bushing to the wrist pin or the wrist pin in the piston itself?

Don't really know. I'm getting the motor replaced tomorrow. Found someone in Atlanta with a 4.6L with 100,000 miles. I can ask him what he found out if he rebuilds the core. Would be interesting to know. I'll let you know!
