Cruise just stopped working. The fuses all check out ok. What would be the next simplest thing that I could check before turning the problem over to a mechanic?
When I bought me truck my cruise control didn't work. I replaced the clock spring and fixed the issue.
With the key on check for good power and ground for the CC wiring in the steering column with a meter. If you have good power and ground there, check the same in the steering wheel behind the air bag. IIRC there are 4 screws on the back side of the steering wheel holding the air bag to the wheel.
Disconnect the batteries and remove the airbag completely. Reconnect the batt's and check for good power and ground and CC switch function. No power or bad ground at the steering wheel are likely signs of a bad clock spring.
Before doing any of this make sure none of your brake lights are burnt out or have corroded wire connectors. This includes the cab rear brake light. And make sure the problem is not the brake switch on the master cylinder. Have a drink and good luck
Check to make sure the switch on the parking brake is not intermitant, that's what happened to my cruise system. Readjusted the paking brake mechanism to give the switch a more positive action and trouble went away along with brake lamp on dash.
Did you check the fuse in the wiring harness that comes off the brake master cylinder? This fused wire is the cruise control recall fix. If the pressure switch goes, the fuse pops.
FINALLY! I have gotten around to checking this out. (It's about time people stop getting hurt and/or dying around here!)
Tried Tugly's link. I got nuthin'. No light on dash or anywhere else. I'll check and see if this truck is subject to the recall. Then try the brake pressure switch next.
Without a scan tool, First check the fuses (you have already). If you have a ohmmeter check sensor on the brake master cylinder for continuity. If no ohmmeter (multimeter) unhook the wire harness from the sensor and jump the terminals of the wire harness, and insulate so the jumper can not short out. Test drive. BE CAREFUL the cruise may not shut off with pushing of the brake pedal use the off button on the steering wheel. This will test if the sensor on master cylinder is good or not. According to my local independent mechanic, and good friend. nine out of ten times the sensor on the master brake cylinder has been the issue for him. If this does not work,,, time to dig deeper.
The brake switch checks out ok as does the wiring harness connected to it. I removed the airbag and i am replacing the CC switch assembly as I broke it getting it out... don't know if it was actually broken before gorilla fingers got hold of it!
Is the air bag assembly and the clock spring all the same part?
