ok, i am new to this forum, i just bought last night an 1994 f350 7.3 turbo diesel automatic, 2 wheel drive it is not the powerstroke. this is my first ford diesel, so i have no idea about any common issues.
trucks runs great, but at highway speed when going up a hill the truck seems to shift into another overdrive? the rpms jump from 2200ish to 1800ish this is around 60 mph.
my first thought is it isnt shifting into overdrive, but when i turn over drive off the rpms jump up around 2500.
okay so that means what? i have never had an automatic truck, all i have had are manual transmissions before this one, please excuse my ignorance when it come to this matter. i would just like to have an idea before i take it to the shop. that way i kinda know if i am getting the truth. thanks in advance for all replies
The torque converter allows slip so that you can sit at a stop light without stalling the engine. But there is a clutch in the torque converter that can lock to stop the slip. That ts what you are feeling.
It appears to be operating normally.
And welcome! (Even if you are in the wrong forum section)
The tc should be locked in 100% of the time in od. If it's not you got problems. Going up a hill the rpm should build slowly and you should build boost and grunt up the hill
thats what i was thinking, i apologize for being in the wrong section, i saw 94 7.3 and posted.
the truck doesnt seem to have any issues shifting, it is just not normal how it will seemingly shift to a higher gear to get through the load and then shift back to a lower gear.

There's no shifting. The tc is just allowing slip again. My f-150 has been doing it for 160k and my f-250 for 180k. Also don't apologize for posting in the wrong section. Chit happens and Id say anyone is welcome to post here. Enjoy your new to you truck and welcome to the forum
That could be a problem with the fuel injection position lever (FIPL) sensor. Sometimes it's called the throttle position sensor. If it is bad or misadjusted it can cause this problem.

you talking to me Mark. If so I'm not going to worry about it. The 150 is on the for sale list and the 250 does two trips down the road per day, each 4.7 kilometres, once in a while, I take it to the local cattle auction to sell some cows, it's about 15 kilometres, no highway. If I have to go farther I take the 350. On another note will this issue cause a problem with the trans. Even though it rarely sees 4th gear
It might. If that is the reason the light is on then it will fix it. If the light is on for some other problem, then no, it won't fix it. Getting the codes read would answer that problem.
ok i dont have a code reader, so after much research over the past day, i believe that the truck is not actually staying in overdrive, i feel what seems like 3 shifts, but after what i have raed it may only be 2 shifts and the tc locking in 3rd.
here are more details, the truck has 4.10 gears, while running 60 mph i am at 2100 to 2200 rpm, does that sound like overdrive? when the truck does "upshift" the rpms drop to about 1800 at 60mph. for a short time, then back to 2200.
Is the fluid full in the tranny did you change it with the filter sounds like it's unlocking in 4th i can feel my truck lock in third but when it's cold i can feel the shift into 4th but the converter isn't locked i feel it lock again after a couple miles but it stays locked after that
