I'm not real sure what just happened this morning but my '95 Areostar stopped moving. While in gear there is a loud noise from trans area and the axles are no longer connected to the transmission. I thhink the trouble is in the electronic AWD portion. I thought at first the driveshaft fell off it was that loud. Has anyone else had this and where do I start tearing into it?
You may have narrowed down the problem; sounds like it's in the transfer case. It has a differential that splits the drive power from the transmission to both the front and rear drive shafts. The E4WD controller senses speed differences between the two drive shafts and engages a clutch to lock the differential when it decided there is too much slippage.
The transfer case uses a chain to drive the front shaft. If the chain is too loose or broken, it will leave the center differential to turn the front drive train freely, preventing the rear from getting any power. At this point, the controller should come in to lock the differential. This is the most likely failure, but without opening up the case, it's hard to know for sure.
