Thermostat Question

Hey all, I have a 88 F250 with a 460, I have to replace the water pump and was going to do the Tstat at the same time. What temp should I go with?? some say 180deg and others say 195deg. I am thinking the 195deg but I do tow a camp trailer and such so maybe the 180 would be better??

195, it's what the EFI system is designed for.

Thanks, That was my thinking but I wanted to make sure, the truck is 27 years old and the T stat and water pump are original,

180* will not cause any issues. OBD1 systems are pretty basic and the air/fuel table will be mostly the same unless temp drops below 150* or so to make it stay in open loop. 180* will make engine run cooler and stave off detonation and allow a little more timing. I just did it myself with no ill effects and the previous positive ones.

I run a 180° in mine because I like having a little extra overhead during the hot summers here. And keep in mind one of the transmission coolers is in the radiator too.

No effect on my fuel mileage, it don't mess with the EFI at all. My truck reports closed-loop WAY before the water temp gets anywhere near 180. For what it's worth my truck is also OBD2 so I seriously doubt it would affect an OBD1 truck, it's only 15° difference between 180 and the factory 195 stat.

No, and my truck (460 5spd) gets 13+ on the road. I certainly did not want to mess that up, and it didn't.

Thanks for all the replies, I am heading out in a few minutes to change the water pump and thermostat, went with the 180deg, The water pump and thermostat are original, I hope they don't fight to much after 27 years.
