Service advice

Ok preparing for next oil service on my 2005 f250 sd king ranch. I only ever have and continue to use motorcraft filters, period so please don't need any input there. My consideration is to switch to either Shell Rotella t5 synthetic blend or Mobil delvac synthetic blend with the ford recommended grade of course. I was trying to maybe get 7500 on service interval and just wanting to upgrade to a better quality low soot alternative. Was wanting to know any of your experiences with different oil brands and the synthetic / synthetic blend options. Also maybe some recommendations. Also getting ready to do coolant flush and refill service my eot and wt averages 15 -20* differenence. Most of the time it averages 17* diff. Had flush performed at ford couple years ago. Was going to follow procedure in tech folder and back flush first then flush with Fleetguard restore, and then the Fleetguard restore plus. My questions are do I back flush again after restore flush then flush with restore plus? Also going to install XDP coolant filter kit. And thermostat recommendations, has stock ford now should I change it and should I use stock or something different? I live in east tn would I get better performance etc. would the mishimoto 200* thermostat be worth the investment? Thank you in advance I know I'm going to get some great professional advice. I love this forum! I have learned so much from y'all already.

If that 17 degreee spred is at 60 to 65 mph on level ground with engine completely warmed up I would be doing a normal three step flush and then changing the oil cooler with a new stock one. Those temps are giving you warning of an eminent egr/oil cooler failure. Attempts at back flushing and saving an oil cooler are rare and I don't personally know anyone thats done it successfully. I'd use the money spent on the flush chemicals as preliminary work for the cooler change not for a cooler salvage project. JMHO.

Oil cooler

Thanks for reply. Yeah was considering changing oil cooler too while I was doing all this other work. Also my luck would be that I would wind up having to do it anyway. Any advice on thermostat?

I personally have had no problems with the stock t-stat but others have. If I lived in a cold climate area I'd probably try the Mishimoto if I was having problems. My 2005 still had the stock t-stat when I sold it and it ran 195 to 204 consistantly if driven long enough to heat saturate. I do however live in S. Ca. If we hit the 40's we're freezing.

I have the original T-stat in mine also. I've read here that the other T-stat is the way to go. There's a post on that right now on the board about that.

On the oil: Lots of opinions and most on this forum are towards the Rotella products, which are fine oils. I have for the most part run Delo 400 15w 40, but this last change I decided to try a blend, so I did 2 gallons of Delo synthetic 5w 40 and the balance the standard Delo 15w 40. The truck really likes it! I may try a full synthetic change one time to see if there's any perceived difference. I just notice easier cold starts on the blend, seems to run a touch smoother but that is likely in my head . The two Delo's have very complementary additive packages, but I also think Rotella has a strong add pack too.

x2 on your temperature spread and changing the oil cooler . Do you still have the EGR intact? Intend to stay that way? If so you might want to do one of the bullet proof style EGR coolers when you go in to do your oil cooler (make sure you put new coolant (blue) lines on that cooler too). Also consider switching out the HPOP's STC branch tube to the new design and heck upgrade the turbo feed/return lines when you are buttoning it back up! The Fumoto block drains will help you do your next flush if you put them in on this one.

I think a coolant filter is a fine plan as well. I found XDP's to be the best value, since last I checked it was the same as Sinister's but with more parts included for less money (especially if you catch a sale).

Last on the thermostat: mine is (so far) also one of the good ones. I only got about half way through the 46 some odd page thread on the 200 deg Mish. unit -- but something keeps bugging me: for those looking at an increase in fuel mileage that can't keep over 190 or so ECT, I guess I get it -- but my fan starts ramping up in the 210ish range so any mileage I'd gain would be more than lost when Dan the Man is working hard. If we always ran around empty and lived in colder climate, and didn't sit over 190 always maybe... Naw, Actually I'd try another stock one -- for our type of use anyways...

Get after that oil cooler...

Thanks to all for the advice. My decision is Bulletproof EGR cooler, Stock Oil cooler, Mobil Delvac Synthetic blend oil, Mobil Delvac EC-1 Coolant. Going with stock ford thermostat. XDP coolant filter kit. Since I have yet to figure out how to get all my Truck info to show at the bottom of my posts, like everyone else. I have 2005 Ford F250 King Ranch 4x4. 113500 miles, Blue spring, STC tube, IPR, 4 new injectors, dummy plugs, standpipes, turbo line, Blue EGR cooler hose, Brass water drain plug, Degas cap, Fumoto coolant drain plugs, Scangauge II, Isspro EV2 fuel pressure, pyrometer, and volt meter. Diesel power service fuel additive.

Yes its a ford upgrade. They came from factory with steel braided lines that over time developed "issues". So the upgrades are steel lines. Worth doing imho.
