Famous Swollen GP Problem

Hey all I need some advice. 1992 F-250 7.3 IDI. 220k. Just traded for this Truck. Truck runs Good. I am having Cold Start issues so I got on the internet and started reading up. Decided it is probably best to start with the GP as who knows how old they are. Drivers side all came out fine. Passenger Side have been nothing but trouble. Rear one has the tip(Not the part in the motor) Already broken off. I can turn them all out and they just spin and spin... Most the post I have read seem to be older so I am hoping maybe someone has a new trick? I was able to pull one out after a few good tugs but the rest are evil. They are all AC Plugs. I am replacing with Motocraft...

Thanks in advance.

JJ

One method I'll try if and when I ever have this problem is one that was mentioned here a while back.

1) With the glow plug loose spray your favorite penetrate around the base so it can work its way down the hole.

2) Clamp onto the hex of the GP with a drill and slowly in reverse apply gentle upward pressure, pulling on the glow plug.

This should wear off any carbon on the GP tip that's causing it to stick or hopefully wear down the swollen tip enough to come out without it breaking.

3) Drink beer!

What is the Average dimension of the Carbon Build up? Are we talking it is twice the size as the electrode its covering?

The reverse drill trick will work what you are doing is threading the gp out.

welcome to FTE.
the amount of buildup will depend on how long it was in the engine.
i have had some that thread rite out with the drill, and others that took hours to get out.
if the penetrating oil does not work rite away, a good carbon cutter like throttle body cleaner works good too.
i have never found a glow plug that the drill and beer trick has not worked on.
granted i have had a few that required 4 inches of jack danials and a lot of cussing, but i have yet had to pull a head due to a stuck glow plug.

On my truck some genius had, at some point in time, replaced the two rear glow plugs (passenger side and driver's side) with Autolites. They died but didn't swell up, I was thanking the heavens for that one.
