1998 Ranger electric fuel pump.

I have a 98 Ranger 4x4 XLT 4.0 5sp.
It has 182K miles.
Once in a while it will blow the fuel pump fuse. It'll go 2 years sometimes. And sometimes the engine will stall just for a second making the truck "buck" as it accelerates.
Could it be the pump is about to fail?
How long do they normally last?
Btw, I change my fuel filter every 2 years, no issue there.
I've owned the truck since new and maintenance is always taken care of.
Also, What's the best way to change the pump?
Thanks.

Could be the pump is dragging and drawing more current.
182k, it might be about done spinning.

I had almost 300000 on my fuel pump before I changed it so milage is not necessarily an indicator. BTW I changed mine just for GP's no issues. You have to either drop the tank or pull the bed (easiest) to get to the fuel pump assy. Go to autozone.com and they have the manuals on line on how to perform maintenance. There have been a lot of postings on these boards on how to pull the bed. Look at your fuel fill hose it may also be needing R&R that is why I changed my stuff. Pull bed 1 time instead of several.

Yeah it could still be OK, but that's not the way to bet.

Pull the bed?
That "sounds" like a pita.
With light wiring and all but I'll look at it.
I have the new pump sitting in my garage. I bought it like 8 years ago when I thought I needed it then

pulling the bed is easiest,,, 3 tiny screws around filler neck ,4 bolts inside bed,, unplug the tail light harness under back bumper, and lift off,, took mine off with just me and my grandson,,, after bed is off fuel tank is in the open as is the rear end and frame,,,,dropping tank is hard because of the filler neck and the hoses being on top of tank and the wiring on top of tank,,,

Pulling bed is easiest, if you have a way to lift it like with a chain hoist or even a couple of ratchet straps. I think there is a you tube video showing how to.

Is there nuts underneath the frame or do I just unscrew from inside the bed?

Just unscrew from inside the bed & unhook taillight wiring harness & filler tube as described. If you also remove the tailgate it'll make the bed lighter to move back to rest on the rear tires, the rear of the bed supported on saw horses.
Check the new pump before installing it or the bed.

Thanks guys. Great site!
I just changed my transfer case and m5od fluids at 180k miles. 3rd time since I've owned it but it needed it still.
