5.8L 351W 1996 eng rebuild - cylinder walls?

I tore apart the block last night and was stupefied to see the cylinder walls. At the top of each cylinder wall, there are TWO rings of discoloration. I would have expected ONE, but perhaps each compression ring causes one when it reaches the top. Has anybody ever seen this? What's weird is that I can still see the crosshatch pattern where the last person who touched the engine attempted to re-hone it. Unfortunately, they used too coarse of a grit.

anybody seen this?

You sure the top dark ring isn't just the head gasket. I think if you pull the head gasket off that will be removed

I am not an engine builder but am I seeing 2 more at the base of the cylinder?
once again the only motor i have built is about 100 air saw motors so its just an observation.

Yeah good spot. I took the block into a machine shop today - all they do are Ford Blocks, for the past 30 years. The guy took a BRIEF look at my cylinders and said, "holy ****, boy, you got yourself a GREAT engine there. That's FACTORY cross-hatching there and those lines at the top are the two compressing rings, doing their job. You got no carbon buildup, no edge to ream, they look GREAT!!! Somebody wasn't driving this thing or maintaining it VERY nicely." Wow. Finally, a break on this Bronco restore. Finally got some slack. Let's see if it has any cracks. He even said he wouldn't recommend touching the heads. He said, "you tore this thing down for Nuthin'. Congrats"

cool.
