Tilt columns

Will a tilt column from a 2wd 78/79 with power steering work in a 2wd 73 with manual steering?

Also, do the 78/79 and the 77- earlier steering wheel's use the same spline count and diameter?

No, the manual steering column is a few inches longer than the power steering column.
On the spline count and diameter, I think they're the same but not a 100% sure.

I'm pretty sure the splines on the end of the shaft is the same, the manual steering column is longer, I can't remember since I usually work on 4x4s, is there a shaft between the sector and column or just a flex coupler? If there is a shaft it can possibly be shortened

There is just a Rag Joint.

If you already have the column then it's a great time to convert to power steering.

Thanks guys, I've thought about converting to power, but, I like my manual steering, keeps me in shape. And I just had the box rebuilt, not in a hurry to spend $300 again....

The column was at the junkyard, if the price is right I'll grab it anyway, I think I can modify it to work. That extra room would be a good spot for a telescoping section and a u-joint.

I'd love to get it from you if you don't want it, it will not last if it's at Tacoma P&P so buy it then hem-n-ha about doing it.

Tilt column (only the wheel tilts) introduced in 1978 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline (A/T only). Available with A/T & 4 M/T (very hard to find). Not available with 3 M/T

3 different 1978/79 T/S switches used with the above: (1) With tilt wheel (A/T & 4 M/T); (2) with A/T only; (3) with 3 or 4 M/T only.

1978/79 F100/350's use different rag joints than 1973/77* F100/350. Tilt wheel makes no difference, but 2WD or 4WD, with or without P/S does.

1978/79's use different steering wheels and horn pads than 1971/77's.

1975/77 F100/350's & Econolines with Speed Control use a different steering wheel, T/S switch and horn pad than like 1975/77's without Speed Control.

*1973/75 F100/250 4WD's do not use a rag joint. The lower steering shaft and coupler connects to the input shaft of the steering gear box with a clamp and thru bolt.

Thanks Bill, do you know what the spline count and diameter is for the 78/79 steering wheels? And do you know what the steering wheel spline count and diameter is for a 70' F600? I'd like to put the F600 wheel in my f250.

The yard it's at lets them sit for at least 6-8 months before they finally crush it, it's safe. I'll grab it and let you know if I decide not to use it.

I haven't a clue, parts catalogs do not list the spline counts.

1978/79 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline steering wheel with M/S: 16" O.D. / Like 1978/79's with P/S: 15" O.D.

1966/70 F500/750 with M/S: 3 spoke 20" diameter black & white steering wheels.

1966/70 F500/750 with P/S: 3 spoke 18" diameter black & white steering wheels.

1971/79 F500/750 with/without P/S: 3 spoke 18" diameter steering wheels (same black & white wheels as 1966/70 with P/S).
