Electrical problems

My son has a 1989 Ford F-250. It has been running great but the other day the battery was dead. The truck would not accept a jump so I replaced the battery. Less than 48 hours later the new one is dead as well Truck was not driven after the new battery was installed). Any suggestions on where to start looking for what is draining the battery.

You jumped the battery and that did not work. Sounds like you hooked up the jumper cables backwards and shorted out the rectifiers in the alternator. This will drain the new battery down to zero or maybe it was just a bad new battery.

If you did hooked up the jumper cables backwards the 1989 did not have the protection diode for the EEC Computer so you may have fried the EEC Computer as well.

A "bad" New battery is the first thing I'd check. After that I would have to look at the fuse block. Ford is known for the fuse block getting overheated. Put a fully charged battery in the truck. Put a DVM on the posts, if you see the voltage dropping start pulling fuses until the voltage stops dropping. Pull the fuses one at a time and put it back. IF and When you get to the fuse that has the draw on it then you can start tracing that line to find out where it is picking up the constant voltage at. It's a time consuming process but it has worked for me multiple times between cars and motorcycles. Good Luck.
