'96 OBD II code P0171
I am new to OBD II. I had a buddy scan my 96 F-150 4.9l and we got P0171 "System (adaptive fuel)too lean, bank 1"
Help.....where do I start?
Driveability seems fine, but getting around 11mpg in town. Just got the truck and only put about 1000 miles on it, so I have no reference on MPG.

'96 OBD II code P0171
I had that code on my 460, and the other bank also. but since yours is inline I guess you wouldn't have that. Mine ended up being that the injectors were dirty and also the DPFE sensor was bad. Before i knew what the problem was I checked and cleared the codes a couple of times and they would come back in about 4 to 5 days.
I had to have Ford do some extended warenty work on mine that is how i found out what this was.

There are a few things to check , If the air & fuel filters havent been replaced in the last 30k miles , check the fuel psi , vacuum or intake leaks , fuel pressure regulator for leaks , even exhaust leaks ahead of the O2 sensors will cause that code . 11 mpg is on the low side for that engine even city mpg .
