Here's the problem. I'm driving into work today and have the lights on. I start noticing the lights going dim and the dimming coincides with the amp-meter i.e. the lights go dim when the amp meter goes flat and the little battery light comes on. Would this be a voltage regulator/alternator problem since the voltage regulator is inside the alternator- correct? Time for a new alternator? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If the battery & its cables checks out fine then test the alternator . If you do find its dead also replace the regulator & rectifier connecters to the alternator , they have been known to cause more than one electrical fire .
Thanks for the reply. I never really thought about replacing the connectors and hadn't suspected them as potential fire starters. I imagine these are dealer items. I assume this would be a cut solder replacement? Thanks again.
paul what years does that apply to? i know i had to put the new connectors on our shop truck ( 90 super duty 460) but was not told about the problem for my 93. also orielys auto parts carries a 130 amp alt that will bolt on in place of the 90 amp that i had on my truck i also have the 302. ok i am gonna stop babbling
Most all auto parts stores carry those connecters , Ive seen them all over . The Ford ones come with butt connecters etc , Its not hard to replace them at all .
I believe the connecter problem went from the 87 - 92 model yrs . Youll notice that any new alternator you buy at Ford comes with dielectric grease in the alternator connections . It reduces the heat buildup , which caused the excessive heat problem / fires etc . Also the wiring , esp on the 4.9L engines , on some model yrs , was very close to the exhaust manifold & the wiring would melt & or touch & short out there .
