Does anyone know (at least pretty darn close) as to how much ACTUAL gas you can cram into the "38" gallon tank? I'm in the process of checking my mpg. I have been driving like an old lady and keeping the rpm's under 2k, even accelerating from a dead stop. I'm at 470 miles on the trip meter right now. I'm carrying a full 5 gal can when it starts to sputter.
My standard cab 2WD automatic has no problem getting 20-21 MPG on the highway, hand calculated, totally, 100% stock. Got to keep it to 55mph or less. Always use my block heater, even when it is warm. I have 3.73 gears and small tires so I could do a lot better with higher different gears. A computer/FICM tune should get me 1-2 MPG at least also. Truck only weighs about 6500lbs.
20mpg is easy if you don't have a giant lifted 4 door long bed and drive like a teenager...
Realistically no......at a particular point in time, under ideal conditions (Road, Load, terrain, speed, temp and fuel quality ) possibly, but don't expect to see it when you hand calculate at the pump. I can't it happening over a tank full. I have done in the 17teens with my stock 6.0 and that's still 7 more per mile than I'm doing with my 5.4l gasser with the same gearing and the 6.0 will pull a house, while the 5.4l would have a tough job pulling a 'sick lady of the night of a slop jar' That
I dont know my 5.4 is getting 10.6mpg right now and yet its not no 1/4 mile king that motor will defiantly pull a house down NO PROBLEM IN LOW RANGE AND THE 4.30 GEARS

I have 3.73 gears same as my 6.0 in the 5.4 and my mileage figures about the same as your....I was comparing the pulling power of the 6.0 to my 5.4. I haven't tried to pull my T/T with the 5.4 yet but considering it will down shift at the first sight of about any incline and usually twice on a real hill. I'm not holding out much hope for the T/T pulling, oh I suppose in four low it will make some difference but it will be a looooooong trip to the lake (around 50 miles) in 4 low and I doubt if I'd be able to maintain the 10 miles to the gallon I get when in Hi range and not pulling. The 6.0 gets about 14 mpg towing the T/T and about the only way to tell the trailer is hooked to it is when you fuel up. just sayin'

UPDATE:
I ran my "38" gallon tank completely empty at 529 miles. I was able to cram 41 gallons back into it. Yes, this involved topping off until the gas stayed at the bottom of the opening, where you can see it. I used the exact same gas pump both times. As stated above, I religously drove under 2k rpm's. I'm on the coast and it's flat. My commute is 25miles one way-mostly rural (45-55). It's a supercab-longbed in excellent working condition. The only thing I haven't factored is any mileage difference (pretty small) between 245 tires(stock) and the 275 tires I have on there. But I'm at roughly 13.5 mpg. Needless to say, i'm pretty skeptical about claims of 16+...(unless they are with 100% gas) I had 10% ethanol.
