OIL ON GLOW PLUGS

Just replaced glow plugs 2 and 8 had codes.Pulled out only to find oil on them. Was this caused by the under boosting turbo I just replaced About 3 weeks ago.Or I,m guessing valve seals or rings in those cylinders.Motor only got 42k its a 04 550.Just replaced number 3 injector day before this did same one 5 weekd ago dealer warrantied the injector.Havn,t had any time to drive since I installed glow plugs other day. When the turbo was underboosting I did see blue smoke. That has since been gone.Just wondering If i got a major problem coming next.I have been pushing coolant out the cap for the last 4 months also. Not a lot but there is residue up there.

Oil on the glowplugs is common. If you think about how it's made, everything below the electrical connector is "inside" the engine. As you unscrew and pull out the glowplug it gets oil on it.

Yes but isn,t it inside the combustion chamber? That is what had me worried. The glow plug is in the chamber why is there oil in there? One would think piston ring problem,Valve seals/guides dropping oil no?

The oil is draining down in the hole when you're removing the glowplug. It's actually under the valve cover as seen here.

That actually depends on the year. 03-04 come in from the side of the head below the rocker box. 05 and up are at a slant into the top of the head inside the rocker box.
Requireing valve cover removal.

None of the trucks required removing rocker box covers to pull the glowplugs.

If you would have ohmed out #2 and #8 glow plug circuits directly at the GPCM connector, it would've saved you the hassle of changing out #2 and #8 glow plugs. For what it's worth, it wouldn't be the first failed GPCM that set only specific glow plug circuit codes like in your case.

I've heard #8 by its self is often a module. Anything to that?

I've seen a bunch of Dannyboy950's posts and he seems very knowledgeable, I bet he was just having a brain cramp or something .

With my failing memory that is a good possibilty Rusty and with no factory training on the 6.0 and no manual maybe you don't have to remove the valve covers.
Even with cataracs in both eyes crewdually's photo shows the glow plug inside the rockerbox. Also the only time I had to remove a glow plug on a 05 was # 7&8 on a non ford chassie. What I call a bread truck with a dog house not really a van but almost as bad.

Maybe for me it was just easier to remove the broken glow plug end. So I wrongly assumed it had to be done on all.
You would think after all these years I would have learned not to assume anything.

Since I have always considered Cheeseit and MChan my masters on the 6.0 I will have to re-elvaluate my position on this.

The picture does correctly show location in the head area. But there is still access from outside. Notice the socket going in...

No need to pull a valve cover no matter what version of the 6.0.

I hate typing so I try to include pictures since as the saying goes it's worth a thousand words. With that said, I'll add a few more words.
For the confusion of access to the glow plugs, remember the harness ends. They are not under the valve cover. They are below the cover, so there's no need to remove them. When I have to remove glowplugs, I do everything I need to do through the wheel well. I hope this clears it up.
If you notice I personally have a 2005 and work on 6.0's. If you still don't believe it, go look for yourself.

Lol. That's what I'm saying. No need to pull the valve covers. IIRC it's a 10 mm deep socket on an extension.
