I bought our old K9 vehicle, 2002 Explorer. It had a rear end whine which I took care of, and then heard a creaking / cracking from the front suspension. On closer inspection, I found the ball joints were trashed. So, on to the project:
Replaced Upper and Lower control arms, struts, hubs, sway bar links, sway bar bushings, rotors, new brake pads and serviced the calipers. The tie rod ends oddly enough were fine.
The RH side upper control arm had a totally frozen mounting bolt and no amount of heat would free it. I had to cut and grind it off without damaging the camber shim.
The explorer now has a 100% new front suspension and the alignment is right on spec.
I also had an O2 sensor code and replaced the B1S2 sensor. The old one was pretty stuck but a few seconds with a 6,000 degree flame wrench and I got it out.
Wow, that's a lot of work. Good job. There's nothing like the feeling of getting all this done, overcoming some obstacles along the way, and then enjoying how much better it performs.
