I have an 02 explorer with 135K and when the front wheels go over speed bumps I get a creaking noise in the front end of the truck. Except for upper ball joints everything is original parts with regards to the suspension.
What are the things I should check for ? Thanks in advance.
stablaizer bushings old/ dry. Shocks worn. Lower ball joints bad.... Try bouncing on the fender and have someone listern, look for the problem... I had a mustang do similar and the rubber bushing with the C- straps over them were dray and squeeking. They were not old or worn, justhard/ squeek... i painted them with antisieze and reinstalled 5 years ago.
"Had the same problem on out 02 mountaineer and it was the sway bar bushings. "
Is that something I can replace myself or should I take it to the dealer ? Do I need any special tools ?
I've done some additional reading and I found there are different sizes.
I have a 2002 4.0L 4x2 XLT.
What is the correct size bushing to buy?
I looked under the truck and looks like there are two bolts and a bracket that hold the bushing in place at each end. Is it possible to do this without jacking the car off the ground?
Changing the sway bar bushings on the 2002-2004 (and probably newer as well) is one of the easier things to do. The two bolts are all that need to be removed (although they seem to be about 3 times longer than they need to be) and don't require any special tools. You may need a breaker bar to get the bolts loosened, but beyond that it's as simple as it appears. It's possibly not a necessity to have the wheels off the ground but it will certainly make things easier. I'm not sure you'd have enough clearance to get the bolts all the way out with the weight of the vehicle on the wheels.
As for the size you need, you'll want to measure the diameter of your bar to be sure you get the correct ones.
