Keep in mind if it matters to you that the Valvoline is not licensed by ford. Even the bottle states "ATF for Mercon V Applications" instead of "Valvoline Mercon V".

Valvoline.com > Products > Valvoline > Automatic Transmission Fluid Valvoline > Valvoline® ATF for MERCON® V applications

I use Castrol Transmax Mercon V, it can be found really reasonable at times.

As per Mark K the 4R100 trans "filter" is actually more of a screen and does not need to be changed out. And a trans fluid flush is the only way to actually change out ALL of the ATF in these transmissions, so dropping the pan to even see that screen isn't needed.

I doubt very much if there is a difference, and it surely won't affect the quality of your life.

Here is Mark Kovalsky's recommended 4R100 fluid change instructions.

Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission - Ford Trucks

Even though he don't recommend changing the filter, I do it at about 100k to 120k just to check for sediment in the pan/magnet more than anything. The pan gasket is reusable, so try not to destroy it.

I've been using the Castrol Transmax in my 05' for the last few changes. Works well as far as I can tell...lol. I also use it in the transfer case.

Changed out or just changed? Also I agree, I would never drop the pan. That is a filter but it is large and efficient enough so it would never contaminate unless you had a full blown clutch failure, etc.

The thing is, how do we know that there is not multi-use fluid in that bottle? We've been told for years not to put multi-use in these transmissions. I'm not chancing it.

Per that link, your answer is found right in the description:

Castrol Mercon V Automatic Transmission Fluid is certified for use in Ford vehicles that require Mercon or Mercon V.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF meets or exceeds the requirements of:
  • JASO 1-A
  • Ford MERCON® V
Maybe it does.

The last time I bought some Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF it did say MERCON V on the bottle. If it hadn't I would not have purchased it.
