Rusty degas tank

OK guys nothing ever goes wrong with my new truck so I thought I'd come over here and practice my typing. I'm in Fort Myers and my camp ground neighbor has a 2008 6.4L.. His degas tank is completely rusty to the point that you can't see the coolant level. Coolant appears normal and mostly clean. He says he has had the tank cleaned twice with the last cleaning being 30,000 miles ago. Ford dealer told him there was some bolt in coolant system rusting and causing the problem. ???? I haven't been able to find a similar problem using search. So, who can tell me what might be going on and how to correct it. Thanks in advance. Stan

LOL,
Stanley don't go and jinx your truck talking like that. Sounds to me like you need a 6.4 toy to play with.
When I changed my antifreeze last year my bottle was filthy inside, was it rust?? hard to say. I cleaned it the best I can and went on with life. In certain light it is hard to see where the fluid level is at. I still have a 5 gallon semi clear container in the garage of the old antifreeze that is more or less clear with just a tad of sentiment on the bottom. So is the plastic bottle picking up the sand/ dirt during it''s heat cycles? I don't know but as long as the coolant looks clean and the level doesn't change I really don't let it bother me.
Stop by more often and use all the 6.4 information stored in that noggin, and I'm still waiting for that coffee.

I had 70,000 on mine when I updated the tank and the old one was nice and opaque. I could see the coolant level (usually low) easily. This guys is very very ugly. Can't see anything and can only check coolant level by sticking something in top and measuring. I'll take a picture tomorrow and post it. I'm just thinking something is wrong and the tank is a symptom. Remember it got that dirty in less than 30,000 miles.

And you are right, I don't want to jinx my truck, it's running fine and no problems at all. However, the fuel economy stinks. It may not be worse than the 6.4L but it's no better either. The good news is that diesel is $2.85 a gallon in North Fort Myers. I don't think it's been that low in the 13 years I've been driving a diesel.

I too don't think the loaded towing economy of the 6.7 is any better. Unloaded maybe a bit but not much.

Does this truck have the newer style EGR valve with the deleted return for the coolant?

What is the routing of the coolant return line?

I think it was not properly flushed the last time...or front cover cavitation perhaps.

Does he grow oil?

Senix here's some pictures. The plumbing don't look right but I've forgotten exactly how it is supposed to go. Would being plumbed wrong cause it to get that dirty. He bought the truck with 17K miles and says the tank looked like that then. These pics were taken with a flash so you can tell how dirty that tank is. The one looking inside is a little misleading, the coolant is not that color, you are seeing the inside of the tank. I forgot to ask about growing oil but I'll check tomorrow,

well right off this truck never had the venturi recall that changed the routing of the coolant. The upper inlet is suppose to blocked off as well.

In this guys case I would recommend taking it in for the recall. Hope that it is still honored.

Most likely at that point they will replace the degas bottle as well.

I believe that is why it is so dirty myself.

Looks like it's a little crowded in there with all those non essential hoses hanging around and yes the bottle is a bit ugly. Mine's not so bad and it really hasn't changed since I changed my antifreeze about 20,000 miles ago. I would love to put a nice new bottle on mine but for 150.00 bucks or so it's not going to happen.
I would be willing to bet that the inside of that bottle after having cleaned a couple of times is grainy/ porous and will never stay clean, any dirt will attach to the bottle.
