oil in coolant tank

I noticed the coolant overflow tank had oil in it after driving today. There was no signs of coolant on the dipstick or oil cap. Does that mean bad headgasket? It is a 2000 ranger xlt 3.0 140kmiles
thanks

I'd all but guarantee that you have a bad head gasket!

Wink

Hi stang3O2,

Interesting! You do mean engine coolant recovery tank right?
Seems to me that when the coolant moves in & out of the tank due to it getting hot then cold>then it draws the coolant in, there would be signs of it elsewere too.

There is also an outside chance that when the coolant was changed last, & if a funnel was used & it had not been cleaned throughly, that would be another probable cause & your just noticing it now.

Is it a lot or just covering the coolant tank inner walls?

There are not so many ways for oil to come into coolant tank.

Usually head gaskets, ore cracked heads, may be cracked block, but ususally head gaskets....
