What This???

I was changing my oil and I noticed stuff growing on the bolts next to the oil filter. I touch the bolt closes to me and white crystal stuff came off. It look like the stuff that grows on batteries but bigger crystals.

Thank you.

Looks a little like dissimilar metal, "galvanic" corrosion? That's interesting. I'd be inclined to investigate any parasitic battery drain or, current leakage through coolant, etc. The idea being, you don't want that kind of thing happening inside the engine either.

battery drain.

I "Don't" think there is any battery drain. My kenwood radio does sometimes report low voltage after starting and there is a P000 code that dealer has been ignoring for the last year. Its at the dealer right now.

For galvanic corrosion don't you need the current flowing throw the parts??
Current leakage through coolant??? Our coolant is a acid so it should pass any current to the first ground point it contacts.

Thank you

Galvanic corrosion makes its own juice. A battery, if you will. That's what a battery is of course. Two different materials on different ends of the reactivity scale, say carbon and zinc. Add electrolyte, you gots current. In the case of fasteners and components, moisture and road salt provides the electrolyte.

Maybe it's nothing, but it looks like a lot of nothing.

It almost looks like something is "leaking" from above, no?
Looks like it is on the bell housing as well??

IDK

I would clean it off real well and keep an eye on it to see if it reappears in the future.

From the photo it almost looks like a calcium/lime build up, but that wouldn't make any sense. Also kind of looks like when someone spill some DEF fluid and it dries leaving the white crystals behind, but then there would be no reason to have any DEF down that low either.

But, I would sure get it off of there before you end up getting your warranty canceled because of an unexplained aftermarket non approved Ford Motorcraft bold growth......Yes, I am kidding on that last statement. Or am I?

Looks like road salt. Maybe it likes the metal of the bolts better?

Hmm, reminds me of the little blocks of sacrificial material Oman out board motor bottom end. Maybe there is a material and a place for it that would attract the bad juju you've got going on there.?

To me, it almost looks like aluminum oxide. Perhaps the steel bolts in the aluminum housing as previously mentioned about electrolysis?

have you used any type of degreaser/engine cleaner in that area or on the engine?

Minor Update

I live in San Diego so I don't see any road salts, I have never cleaned the engine, or sprayed it down. I think the white stuff is aluminum oxide, it just should not be in this location.

I could see the stuff on the starter, that is a major electrical draw.

Does coolant run touch that part????

Thank you.
