So I have a 1997 F350 powerstroke that takes a long time to turn over, it used to take maybe 2-4 cranks and it would start right up, now its more about 10, the truck has sat for a couple of months and it only has 97k. It does this when it's cold or if at opperating temp and I shut it off and go right back to start it. Could this be a high pressure oil pump problem? I'm actually purchaseing it from my grandfather because he has no use for it and thinks my 6.9 isn't reliable. Anyway if I could get some help that would greatly be appreciated.
Next time you go to start it, before you do, check the oil in the HPO reservoir. It should be about a 1/2" from the top. Also, check the tin nut on the back of the IPR. Make sure it is still on there and snug. Don't over tighten it, it will strip out.
Okay, thank you. Could the IPR be dirty possibly as well if the nut is there? And with the HPO should I need to add more oil, I just put in 15-40 correct?
15-40 is fine as long as its diesel rated. You only need to add oil to the hpop if, like Bill said, its not within 1/2" from the top. If mine sits a long time it takes longer to start.
So I checked the IPR and the nut is on the back, I checked the HPOP and it was filled up 3/4 from the top, so I decied to check the batterys because it was on a maintainer and it didn't hold a good charge, found that both batteries in all 6 cells were dry. Filled them with water, started up no problem.
