I have a 1983 F100 auto with 300 L6 and C6 transmission from a 1980 f150. Starter is the right one for the transmission but whenever I try to start it, it makes an awful grinding sound. Ive replaced the solenoid and cables. Anyone know what might be going on?
Not sure what a "ridging sound" is, but I'm thinking it could be one of three things:
Solenoid Chatter: if the noise is coming from the solenoid you have a bad cable or connection. You say you've replaced the cables, but does the negative cable go to the engine or frame? It should, actually, be both and where they connect should be shiny.
Drive Gear: If the drive gear on the starter or the ring gear on the flex plate are bad you'll get a horrible grinding sound. Pull the starter and look.
Battery: If the battery is low or has a bad cell it won't provide enough current to run the starter and the solenoid can chatter. Have the battery tested.
Hey all, I found i had the wrong starter. I was using a 10 tooth instead of a 9. but that didnt totally stop my issues, the top bolt keeps coming loose. Any advice?
