I have a 2001 f-150 s.c. 4x4 with a 5.4 and auto tranny. Sometimes when shifting into reverse the tranny hesitates, I can feel it shifting into gear when I move the shifter to R but when I let off the brake and start to give it gas the truck hesitates briefly then I feel a slight surge and it takes off, also sometimes if I slow down from highway speed to around 10 to 20 mph and give it gas the tranny will downshift hard into 2nd gear. It doesn't do these things all the time. The truck had 24000 miles when i bought it and now has 30000, the only thing I tow with it is my 16ft fishing boat and the previous owner never towed anything with it. Any comments would be appreciated.
I have the same problem with my Expedition, especially when I use the parking brake. I was very concerned that it was the transmission, but at least in my case it was the rear disc brakes sticking.
After reading your reply I think that could be the cause because my brakes have always been a little sticky. About the hard downshifting it only does it every great once in awhileso I was wondering if maybe I was right at the point where the tranny would normally downshift into 2nd and since I was getting on the throttle it caused it to shift harder.
I'd say look carfully at the symptoms and see if they fit. A harsh downshift is usually a noteworthy event. Next time you get one see if you can make sense out of it. If you then develop a theory of what causes it to happen, you can validate it by repeating the actions. Once you are confident that you can repeat it and that it is not an acceptable condition, then you can take your service tech for a ride and show him.
