intake gasket replacement

Hello I have a 98 f150 4.6 4x4 with 175.000 miles, I suspected the intake gasket is leaking, I'v never done this before. What is involved with this type of repair? Will the intake gasket leak bad enough to leak antifreeze on the floor? Is it okay to continue to drive with this problem? Bad weather is on the way and I need this truck any help would be great thanks in advance.

Have you pressure tested the cooling system to confirm this? If, in fact the gasket is leaking, the longer you wait to repair it the more likely it can cause other problems. If the leak is minor some stop leak might help, but leaving that stuff in for long periods of time is not good for your radiator!

Intake gasket

Hi Rusty thanks for the reply no I haven't pressure tested, I can see antifreeze on top of the engine and I found a big piece of black plastic also. Its funny I haven't drove this truck for three days and all of a sudden I can see antifreeze dripping on the floor, I will pressure test though.

+1 on the pressure test. Also keep in mind that OE intakes are notorious for cracking along the front where a coolant crossover is molded into it. Which is why a lot of the aftermarket

intakes are plastic with a metal crossover. Compared to...

Hi Rusty,Zombie killer,Steve(ill) thanks for the reply, are all intake manifolds plastic? When I tare down then I should add the intake manifold to my parts list? What doe's the mass air flow sensor attach to?And the tube coming off the air filter what doe's that attach to? Mine looks like metal, unless I'm not seeing what you all are seeing( and that's entirely possibly). The photos are awesome thanks for sending them. On the photo showing the fittings that may pull out, is the fitting still good and the plastic just give way? I'm asking because I live miles from town and the town that I live by doesn't have a ford dealer. What else should I consider when all this is apart? And I will take you all's advice and pressure test before I begin work. Thanks again for your time, Ron

Im more familiar with the 5.4 motor... starting at the drivers fender you should have a plastic snorkel that puts fresh air into the air cleaner box. out of the box you will have a large rubber hose that attaches to mass air flow plate. Out of that you have a long rubber hose about 4 inches diameter that connects to the throttle body on top of the manifold. The manifold is plastic, the other parts are aluminum.. attached by rubber hoses.

Intake gasket replacement

Hi Steve I was just getting ready to go to bed and I thought I would check the forum one more time, the part that fits under the throttle body is that what is called the upper intake? and that is the part in question that is plastic? the part that is called the lower intake is that plastic as well? I priced both intakes on rockauto the upper is $159 and the lower is $189, pricey little things lol. If the bottom intake is allum than all i would need is the top right? What about the egr gasket throttle body gasket or is there a gasket set that would cover every thing I would need. Thanks again for your help. Ron
