Eh, I changed my mind anyway. I been readin around and I think I'm gonna go with a Comp 268H cam.
I'm really getting too many hours in at my job right now, so I'm gonna look around for some side work and try to buy a cam and headers at the same time.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm more of an electronics guy, so this mechanic work is still pretty new to me, but I haven't failed yet, so I'm gonna keep learning all that I can.
i just bought the hedman header and im not really happy with having to notch the bracket or the fact that the primaries are only 1 1/2" think im selling these and going with the bigger hookers. and have fun doing the cam on your straight six, i just got done with it and it was a royal pain in the @$$. had to cut a bracket from behind the grill and pull everything else off the front of my truck (grill radiator etc...) pull the accessory bracket harmonic balancer and everything else up front then jack my engine up about 7 inches to clear my bumper and then the cam gear split in half when i was pulling it from the cam. and be careful when you slide it out, i managed to scratch a couple bearings in the process so now i get to replace more stuff . dont mean to scare you, just wanted to give you a heads up if your planning on getting into this yourself
obviously no. but im use to working on ohc cars... much easier. and i just finished with most of it and i wouldnt say its that easy either. as for the headers im not as worried about notching the bracket as i am having such small primaries and smaller than stock collectors
I don't know what I'd prefer to do more, unhook and pull the entire engine to do a cam or disassemble the front end body work (INCLUDING taking off the front bumper and radiator core support!). Most anything other than an OHC engine requires a bit more work, but it's doable. All depends on how easy you want to make it
yea, i hear you on that one. didnt have to drop the bumper tho, just cut the bracket that the stock grill screwed into off(my billet grill doesnt use it so i dont need it anyways)
all i did was remove the grill, radiator, AC compressor (hung it out of the way) and unbolted the motor mounts to lift it enough to swing out over to the drv side to clean. wasnt bad at all.
Yeah, I figured the cam wasn't gonna be a super easy task. But I've got the Hayne's manual, so at least I've got a reference on the right way to remove it.
i dont know how far i would trust the haynes manual, cant recall off the top of my head but ive had a few incidents where what i was working on was nothing like what haynes described... chiltons on the other hand hasnt let me down yet
I have a 79 F-150 4x4 4.9L strait 6 with no ac or emissions unit on there. the hedders say its for a 2wd only but i believe thats just cause thats only what they tested it on. i also have a 2wd and there is less clearance by the exhaust exit than on my 4x4 will these hedders work on my 79?
Hmmmmm Cheese, you guys got my gulliver gears turnin' again. Has anyone tried headers in a VAN? I wonder what kind of nightmare that would be. Put a new crate motor in it two years ago and would like to reap fuel savings benefits of running a header if possible. Any ideas?
