All the paint codes I find for my 1977 F-100 are two digit. My door plate code is however a single "Y".
Does anyone know if this is a valid code? I'm pretty sure my paint is (light?) Jade Metalic. see my signature for a pic.
Like Bill said Y=jade metallic for the 77-78 model years.
I don't know how you're looking up the paint code but two digits = two tone paint, single digit = one color.
Unfortunately if you order paint by the code it will not be correct. I've run into this problem several times. Including two complete paint jobs, one by a noted shop. It turns out a light (poly ? ) green with no metallic. My interior is still the stock color so I know something is wrong. Also the exterior paint was original (single color) when I got the truck.
I tried having NAPA match it and they just wasted $170 of my money including the reducer and hardener.
I guess I'll try to get the last shop that painted it to match it.
The link actually looks like a dealer brochure to me. I have a PPG paint chip sheet for 1978 and it has the Y code Jade Poly. The chip has a definite metallic look to it.
But from what I can tell http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/281816181263?ul_noapp=true&chn=ps&lpid=82 It's the same as 1977. So I don't know why you are getting a non-metallic paint.
On the assy line, when the paint in the vats start getting low, someone would just "add" paint to the vat or pot, if you will. This made for a very difficult time for body shops to match paint. Especially in metalics. You've seen those cars going down the road that have the same "color" bumper, but it sticks out like a turd in a punch bowl? Same thing.
MOST paint and body stores can match paint. take your ashtray or glovebox in and they can match it with a spray sample even. The trick is to be there when they do the spray sample so you can see how many coats it took to get it there. Was it 3 coats "wet" or "Medium wet" or was it two coats "medium wet with a fog coat?"
Then again, if your doing a full repaint, you won't tell a difference.
