6.7 water pump

My dad thought he had the dreaded radiator leak on his 2013 but after getting it checked it turned out to be the water pump.

Dealer quoted him $1200 to replace it!

Guess they have to pull it down like they do for a radiator, pull almost the whole front end off.

Anyway, he pulled it from the dealer and is taking it to an independent shop that quoted him $600 if he brought his own pump to them.

Pump at the dealer was $160, dad got them to give it to him for $120 somehow.

Fun, Fun, Fun...

Dad does the same work I do, he has about 160K on his truck, so no warranty.

Don't these engines have 2 water pumps (one for each circuit)? If there are two, is there any benefit in getting them both done while they're in there anyways?

I take it he does not work on his own equipment either.

I try to do as much as I can myself.

This type of repair I'd be all up in it.

There aren't two pumps on the motor.

And I believe the secondary pump is electric.

I need to start quoting $1200 anytime somebody asks me to change their water pump. Maybe they'll stop asking me. I've rolled around in too much coolant.

Nope... The secondary water pump is driven off the accessary belt.

In addition to replacing the water pump you don't have to remove the entire front of the truck. Remove the fan/fan shroud and you have access including from the bottom of the truck. No big deal

1200 isn't bad. That's what the shop wanted to change my Fiance's stupid Mini Cooper water pump.

I did it for 200...but holly crap was it not fun and a bunch of work. Hopefully, this engine isn't as much work.

I find this engine pretty accessible. It looks busy under the hood, but everything is laid out a lot better than the 2 previous PSDs in my opinion. Was it the primary or the secondary pump that failed?
