Hi I have a question, I have a 2001 and it went from running fine to stalling when I put it in drive. I can get into reverse fine and everything its when I place it into drive that the truck stalls out. I have been told everything from a fuel pump to needing a new transmission so I'm hoping for an easy to check yourself try and fix kind of thing. Any suggestions ???? Help a girl out here LOL
I cant see it being a fuel pump, how is the idle? Is the TCC solenoid stuck open? If it idles fine and runs when your in reverse, the only thing I can think of is the TCC is stuck on. it's like putting a gearshift into first at idle without stepping on the clutch. Is the overdrive light flashing? Check engine light on, try to shut off the overdrive, button on shifter and see is it still does it. Than it's scanner time, gotta see what codes or data you have, it's an older truck but you should get PID's out of that truck. Good Luck
Thanks no check engine light is off has not come one for this issue at all. We are checking the IAC now but it looks good. The idle is great until you move to drive is the TCC hard to change out? Thanks again for the reply
If the TCC were stuck on, it should also stall in reverse and PARK. The TCC is internal to the transmission, it is not a DIY project to test or replace.
Can you drive the truck forward at all if you manipulate the throttle when putting in it in DRIVE? have you tried putting the gearshift lever in the 2nd gear position?

If I hold my foot on the gas yes I can get it to stay running. We cleaned the IAC and it worked fine once, then I shut it off and it did the same thing all over again. I thought maybe it just needed a new IAC but I'm not sure on that either, but can't understand why cleaning it fixed the problem until we shut the truck off. Any thoughts? We tried 2nd and 1st as well without foot on gas it stalls in anything but reverse or neutral. As I said I'm learning to be more DIY but also need some guidance as to what to look at next.
I just dont want to take it to the shop without having tried all I can since the shop guy thinks it's one of 2 things. He said fuel pump or transmission. According to him he will be charging anywhere from 450.00 to 1600.00 to fix it needless to say I'm still working on the DIY end of it right now.
Cleaning IAC valves sometimes works, but replacement is often needed if that's the problem.
Could be a vacuum leak although they usually cause idle speed and quality issues as well as usually setting "lean" fault codes.
So do you think it's worth replacing the IAC before shooting it to the shop. We have checked for a vacuum leak and all is good there. She runs like a champ idle is good the only issue is the stalling when you move it to drive. When we cleaned the IAC she ran good, no problems shifting took the test ride like a champ no hesitation shifting gears or anything. If the tranny was gone there would be more than just the stalling correct? Sorry for all the questions just trying to learn as I go.
