I have a few questions. What would I have to do to convert an 89 EFI 351W in a F-250, to a carburated engine. The EFI engine went out, and a crate engine has been purchased, what wiring, and fuel changes will I have to do? The truck has a 5-spd, and it is used for pulling. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Apr-02 AT 01:16 PM (EST)]You will have to replace the fuel pump and pickup. The carb set up runs on low pressure. You'll need a new lower intake for the carb and you will have to re-tube all the vacum supply lines that came off the upper intake for the brakes, etc. The egr set up won't work, since you won't be emissions legal going to a carb you can just do away with it.You will also need to hook up a throttle linkage at the carb.May be easier to find a early 80's truck at he salvage yard and get the parts. As for all the sensor inputs to the computer, you can remove that portion of the wiring at the harness.Since you're pcv set up ties in to the upper intake you will need to disconnect it and either re-route it or replace it with breather vents on the valve covers. You can emove the stock air box and hoses.Gee,maybe it would be easier and cheaper to fix the EFI set up?Oh one more thing,I'm not sure how the TFI ignition interfaces with the computer. You may have to switch over to the old duraspark ignition set up.
I did the swap with a 302. Changes and purchases I made were: Stock intake and gaskets, DuraSpark ignition, A fuel pressure regulator to knock the in-tank pump pressure down to 3lbs. The only thing I had to actually buy in a store was the fuel pressure regulator (20.00) and the intank gaskets (5.00) on ebay. Just take out the efi unit, intank and all, put the new carberated intank in, disconnect the high pressure pump below the driver's door, add the fuel presure reg. and hook up vacume lines. I had to disconnect the wire plug that runs the in-tank fuel pump, then I took a wire from the pump and ran it to the "switch ignition" side of the coil. Then I pulled the distributor and added the older duraspark one and coil and modual. My engine turned over 3 times and fired up runs great!!!!! I have a wire diagram for the duraspark2 I can email you if you want it. I though the job was pretty simple.
A wiring diagram would be greatly appreciated, the swap doesen't sound to hard, I just wanted have all neccesary parts on hand, before I attempted it. I would also appreciate anymore info on the swap that you have. Thanks Rockstar.
